AKI KAURISMAKI  (Finland/Fra/Ger 2011)
André Wilms, Blondin Miguel, Jean-Pierre Darroussin

Prize winner at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival this is a tender
and uplifting film from the Finnish director Kaurismäki. Marcel,
an elderly bohemian shoe-shiner, tries to help a young illegal
African immigrant seeking safe passage to England. With
innate optimism and the unwavering support of his community,
Marcel stands up to officials doggedly pursuing the boy for
deportation. Shot around the port of Le Havre, the story has
echoes of ‘Welcome’ screened in 2011 but the style has the
flavour of Jean Renoir and Jacques Tati.
