ROME, OPEN CITY          [12]       103 mins
ROBERTO ROSSELLINI  (France/West Germany/Italy 1962)
Aldo Fabrizi, Anna Magnani

Lewes Film ClubRivetting drama about the Nazi occupation of Rome and the brave few who struggled against it. The film, which unfolds over several days during the Nazi occupation, was shot with electrifying urgency months after the city's liberation using non professionals as well as trained actors, with scavenged film stock, partly on location in a tenement and ruined streets. Conceived and directed amid the ruin of WWII there is immediacy in every frame. A watershed moment in Italian cinema and a classic masterpiece.
