Io Capitano – literally “Me, Captain” or “I am the Captain!” – has rightly won critical praise both for its gripping performances by a mostly non-professional cast and for its uncompromising visualisation of the brutalities and injustices involved in the traffic of economic migration from global South to North across the Mediterranean. Garrone deftly balances individual dramas (his two young leads, Sarr and Fall, are outstanding) against wider social, economic, political and cultural backgrounds – and while some episodes of attempted ‘magic realism’ and plot coincidences strain credulity in places, they certainly don’t detract from the overall power of this impressive film.

7.6 / 10 – IMDB

“The superb casting of the two lead co-stars, who were only told the outcome of their characters storylines on the day of shooting, really buoys the film. Sarr and Fall are wonderful young actors and excel in displaying joy and fear, presenting a warming and believable brotherly dynamic.”

“Biting realist social commentary and magical realism sit side by side as excitement turns to dread and horrific scenes of torture and dehumanisation play out.”
