Monica

Andrea Pallaora (US / Italy 2023)

Trace Lysette, Vladmir John Perez, Ali Amine Rated 15 Run time 106 mins Pre-order tickets

This is a beautifully told story which explores universal themes of abandonment, aging, acceptance, and redemption. Trace Lysette plays the estranged daughter Monica, who is returning to the family home she was thrown out of as a teen in order to care for her dying mother. It is a fact that Lysette is a trans woman playing a trans character with great aplomb, something to be acknowledged. However, although a part of the story, this is not fetishized but dealt with as any other part of life.

“a quiet, heartfelt, and beautifully nuanced drama that feels unique and universal, featuring what will surely go down as one of the best performances of 2023”

“Formally intriguing and genuinely gripping, “Monica” avoids the usual cliches and contains many lovely performances and graceful moments. Even the most jaded moviegoers may be surprised by how much “Monica” moves them. “
