Tatiana Huezo (Mexico/ Germany 2023)

Montserrat Hernandez, Maria de los Angeles Pacheco Tapia, Luz Maria Vazquez Gobzalez Rated 12A Run time 102 mins Pre-order tickets

A fascinating and affectionate portrait of an isolated Mexican village called El Eco, set in the lush green mountains of Puebla state. The men have travelled to cities to work, and the mothers play a number of different roles to provide for their families. Huezo went to live in the village for 18 months, and her patient filmmaking has created a portrait of young people growing up.  The children are involved from the outset in the work of animal husbandry, and are closely involved in the births and deaths in the community.

7.5 / 10 – IMDB

“While Huezo shows us a profoundly holistic view of what it means to be alive and of the struggle to subsist on the land, perhaps what she most powerfully conveys is the difference between natural phenomena – birth and death, sowing and reaping – and limitations that are patriarchally constructed and imposed on the women, young and old. “

“In The Echo, the balance between detached observation and incisive commentary is highly effective – its larger vista reinforces rather than blunts the power of its message”
