The Last Picture Show (Classic) and A.G.M (starts 7.30pm)

Peter Bogdanovich (US 1971)

Timothy Bottoms, Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges Rated 15 Run time 118 mins Pre-order tickets

An elegiac and erotic hymn to lost virginity, traditional values and an old way of life, crystallized in the closure of the local fleapit. The film focuses on the sexual adventures of the permanently vexed Timothy Bottoms and the dumbly handsome Jeff Bridges, who both fall for high-school coquette Cybill Shepherd. The lustrous black and white photography manages to evoke the past and live in the present – to be at once mournful, lyrical and vital. Superb performances all round add to the charm of this fine film.

The Last Picture Show explores the universality of aspects of the human condition, the most obvious of which is the need to connect. “

“It’s easy to forget that The Last Picture Show was filmed in 1971, not 1951. Set design and strong direction help the illusion, but no move on Bogdanovich’s part was more critical than the decision to shoot the movie in black-and-white. That one simple stylistic decision transforms the film. “
